The SMTO Conference 2009 was presented by George Kousaleos, USA
entitled Sports & Performance Bodywork: A 4-system approach. A
brief synopsis of the Seminar can be found below.

The recipient of the Nick Carter Memorial Salver for Services to
Massage Therapy was Moira Watson from the Borders School of Massage
(seen here with SMTO Chairman, Maggie Brooks-Carter).

Using George's Core Myofascial Therapy the workshop covered a
range of techniques and routines with the 'athlete' in mind, taking
into consideration the concepts of athletic performance
Th e
two-day seminar examined
the four basic styles of performance inherent in all athletic
disciplines. Utilising structural integration and myofascial therapy
theories and techniques that are appropriate for each style of
performance, participants focused on
developing training and event protocols for endurance,
sprint, power, and multi-skilled
athletes. Presentations on performance mechanics, somatotypes,
and the balancing of the autonomic nervous system highlighted
a comprehensive study of advanced therapies for the athletic
performer.
Day One – Foundations On the first day of the
seminar, George presented the primary concepts of the
physical and psychological demands of training and
performance for all athletes. A breakdown of somatotypes and their
inherent strengths and challenges was used to discuss the
development of bodywork protocols for the endurance, sprint, power
and multi-skilled athlete. Myofascial and structural techniques for
the leg, pelvis and back were presented for both training and
performance cycles.
Day Two – Advanced Methods On day 2, George
presented advanced strategies for developing protocols that are both
sport-specific and performance-level based. Techniques for working
with intrinsic myofascial tissues of the axial and appendicular
regions and strategies to balance the autonomic nervous system were
taught. Advanced protocols for the arms, shoulders, chest, neck and
head were also be presented.
At the conclusion of the seminar participants were able to
organise a manual therapy treatment plan for athletic performers
based upon the demands of the sport or performance on a specific
body type at various points in the athlete’s training, development
and competition.
George will be presenting this workshop again in London on 17/18
